Overview

We are seeking a qualified Learning Specialist to support post-secondary students with learning disabilities and other challenges at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. This role involves collaborating with diverse students, interpreting disability documentation, developing personalized learning strategies, and promoting inclusion within the academic community.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Hold a master’s degree in psychology, counseling, special education, rehabilitation, social work, disability services, or a related area.
  • Possess at least one year of experience assisting students with learning disabilities at the college level, preferably with teaching responsibilities.
  • Be knowledgeable about the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other relevant disability laws in higher education.
  • Capable of interpreting psychoeducational evaluations and disability-related documents to inform support strategies.
  • Skilled in teaching reading and writing, as well as devising alternative learning methods tailored to individual needs.
  • Experience with students who have physical, psychological disabilities, or are on the autism spectrum is advantageous.
  • Committed to nurturing diversity and inclusion, with proven ability to work effectively with students from varied backgrounds.
  • Exhibit strong organizational aptitude, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in team environments.
  • Possess solid computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google suite, assistive technology, and relevant student support software.
  • Willingness to occasionally work evenings or weekends when required.

Preferred Competencies

  • Two years of experience supporting post-secondary students with learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge and application of assistive technologies in education.
  • Prior work within higher education academic support services.
  • Experience with student management systems such as Navigate or Accommodate.
