Clinical Surgical Superintendent - General Surgery Department - Fixed Term 12 Months

About the Role and Employer

The Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) invites applications for a fixed-term (12 months) Clinical Surgical Superintendent position within the Department of General Surgery located primarily at Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospitals. WSLHD provides comprehensive healthcare services across multiple facilities in the western Sydney area, with a commitment to continuous quality improvement and community health enhancement.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide admitting, consultation, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient, and on-call specialty surgical services according to facility needs.
• Organise and coordinate surgical registrars to ensure the delivery of effective, safe, and efficient clinical care.
• Contribute to local clinical initiatives, optimize patient flow via appropriate rostering, and uphold clinical governance standards.
• Collaborate with Facility Managers, Clinical Network Directors, RACS Supervisors, and the Medical Services Directorate.
• Manage administrative responsibilities for surgical registrars and resident medical officers including scheduling and leave management.
• Offer clinical leadership, serve as a role model for aspiring surgeons, and promote surgical vocations and sub-specialties.
• Supervise basic surgical trainees, conduct performance appraisals, and support surgical training examination organization.
• Dedicate up to 40% of clinical time to a surgical subspecialty area.
• Engage actively in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research activities.

Candidate Requirements and Eligibility

• Possess or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent as per Staff Specialists (State) Award 2022.
• Must be Australian citizen or permanent resident.
• Demonstrated expertise in elective and emergency general surgical procedures with sound clinical knowledge.
• Exhibit high-level interpersonal and communication skills suitable for senior medical practitioner roles.
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Involvement in quality assurance initiatives and applying evidence-based clinical practices.
• Commitment to teaching, supervision, and research to support clinical excellence.
• Applicants nearing fellowship award within three months are eligible to apply.

Additional Information

• The role includes authority over surgical registrar and resident clinician scheduling and leave.
• Successful applicants may receive a conjoint academic appointment at the associated university, linked to their qualifications, without additional remuneration.
• This role is governed by the Staff Specialists (State) Award conditions.
• A Working With Children Check clearance is mandatory.
• The department covers two campuses with a high emergency surgical workload and sub-specialties such as colorectal, bariatric/metabolic, upper gastrointestinal, complex abdominal, head and neck, and breast surgery.
• The position tenure is from 1 February 2027 to 6 February 2028.
