Fixed Term (12 months) Postgraduate Fellow - Radiation Oncology - Westmead Hospital

Position Overview

Westmead Hospital is seeking a qualified medical practitioner for a Fixed Term Postgraduate Fellowship in Radiation Oncology focused on Gynaecological and Genitourinary cancers. The fellowship is available for up to full-time (1.0 FTE) and commences on February 1, 2027, lasting 12 months. It is situated within the Radiation Oncology Network of the Western Sydney Local Health District. Successful candidates will engage in comprehensive clinical and research activities based at both Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals.

Clinical and Research Responsibilities

The fellow will develop a profound understanding of Gynaecological and Genitourinary tumour management while enhancing leadership, teaching, and organizational skills. Clinical duties include participation in multidisciplinary tumour stream meetings, new and follow-up patient clinics, inpatient consultations, and radiation treatment planning. These clinical commitments total approximately three days per week, with the remaining two days dedicated to research activities. Fellows are expected to contribute to ongoing research portfolios and submit at least one manuscript or publication during their tenure.

Operational Environment

The radiation oncology services provided span Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals, delivering around 2,000 radiation treatment courses annually. Treatment modalities include Varian TrueBeams with Eclipse planning and ARIA cancer records, covering orthovoltage, brachytherapy, total body irradiation, stereotactic body and brain treatments, motion-management techniques, and pediatric patient care. The department emphasizes excellent patient care, teamwork, and has a strong tradition in teaching and radiation biology research.

Selection Criteria and Qualifications

• Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.
• Eligibility for or current registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
• Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) or equivalent, with successful completion of all RANZCR Faculty of Radiation Oncology exams.
• Current NSW Environment Protection Authority license.
• Sound clinical expertise in Radiation Oncology evidenced by relevant experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication and the ability to work harmoniously within multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent organizational and supervisory capabilities with a commitment to professional development and quality assurance.
• Experience in research translation, clinical leadership qualities, and a focus on patient safety and healthcare system efficiency.
• Willingness and ability to work clinically at both Westmead and Blacktown Hospitals for at least 60% of employed time.
• Commitment to teaching medical students, radiation oncology trainees, junior medical officers, and allied health professionals.
• Active participation in research and quality improvement projects approved by the department.

Applicants must provide evidence of a Working with Children Check issued by the relevant NSW authority.
