Clinical Fellow in General Surgery

Overview

This Clinical Fellow position in General Surgery is based at University Hospital Wishaw under NHS Lanarkshire, commencing in August 2026 for a 12-month tenure. It caters to candidates at FY2 level or above aiming to gain substantial experience before transitioning to core training or applying for higher surgical training posts, including ST3/LAT or Specialty Doctor career paths.

Role and Team Environment

The successful candidate will integrate with a dedicated General Surgical Team consisting of 11 Consultant General Surgeons, specialized Breast Surgeons, and four Specialty Grade Doctors delivering comprehensive general surgical services. This position offers excellent exposure to Emergency General Surgery, featuring a dedicated consultant for emergency receiving and theatre during core hours, providing valuable supervision and training.

Elective duties are assigned through a weekly schedule, including opportunities for endoscopy training, fundamental surgical procedures such as hernia repairs, and minimally invasive surgery skill development. The unit strongly supports portfolio enhancement through educational and training initiatives, with a proven history of fellows progressing to surgical training roles at various levels.

Candidate Requirements and Support

Applicants must possess full General Medical Council registration with a license to practice and have completed at least one year of full-time postgraduate training or an equivalent part-time/flexible arrangement. Part-time applicants are welcome.

Though not officially NES-recognized for training, the post provides equivalent learning experiences in a busy setting with a full shift rota including daytime and junior tier out-of-hours on-call duties.

Internationally trained candidates will receive comprehensive support, including an induction period and a two-week observation phase depending on experience, initially working 40 hours weekly before joining the full rota, which includes full banding benefits.
