Position Overview
The Youth Justice Coordinator role, based in Dunedin, involves managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in alignment with the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989. The position requires collaboration with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, community members, victims, police, and the Youth Court to address the root causes of offending by youth and ensure accountability while safeguarding the interests of victims and the public.
The role emphasizes adopting a mana-enhancing and restorative approach and leveraging community resources and networks to foster positive futures free from offending for tamariki and rangatahi. Occasional regional travel may be necessary.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
- Effectively coordinate Family Group Conferences consistent with relevant legislation and family justice standards.
- Engage and build trusting relationships with youth aged 12 to 18 years, their families, youth justice professionals, victims, and community stakeholders.
- Demonstrate strong facilitation skills to plan meetings, meet deadlines, identify services, and guide conference processes.
- Manage workload independently with clear communication and proficient report writing.
- Adhere to and incorporate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in daily practice.
- Possess understanding and respect for cross-cultural practices, especially Māori tikanga and Pacific Islander cultures.
- Maintain strong strategic community youth networks and collaborative relationships.
