Job description

About Us

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is dedicated to centering tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) in its work. Our organizational values emphasize prioritizing tamariki, embodying aroha (love), respecting mana (authority and dignity), practicing tika and pono (correctness and truth), valuing whakapapa (genealogy), and acknowledging that oranga (well-being) is a continuous journey.

About the Role

Our Youth Justice Residences offer a secure, nurturing environment aimed at supporting rangatahi who have committed offenses on their path toward positive change. Beyond maintaining safety and security, the role focuses on rehabilitation recognizing the complex causes of offending. Tasks include maintaining a safe space, aiding young people in personal growth focusing on health, education, training, and employment, as well as fostering stronger ties with whānau and community, encouraging connections to supportive services.

This position requires shift work providing 24/7 care, with a rotating roster including morning shifts from 6:30am to 3:00pm and evening shifts from 2:30pm to 11:00pm, covering weekends and public holidays. While tertiary qualifications in sport, health, education, or youth work are advantageous, practical life skills such as carpentry, cultural knowledge, arts, or sports expertise are highly valued.

Motivation to engage with our approach is critical, and having skills in tikanga and te reo Māori is beneficial. The role demands openness, teamwork, and a commitment to the organization's vision and values within a collaborative and reflective environment. You will actively support rangatahi daily, addressing their distinct needs to facilitate transformative experiences and improve their future outcomes.

What You Will Bring

  • Strong desire to positively impact young people's lives
  • Capability to establish supportive relationships with diverse individuals
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to contribute to an inclusive work environment
  • Knowledge of Tikanga and Te Reo Maori is a plus, with development support provided
  • Readiness to work varying shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Physical fitness adequate for safely supporting rangatahi
  • A clear, full driver’s license

Additional Requirements

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in New Zealand as citizens or permanent residents. Meeting safety checks and police vetting as outlined in the Children’s Act is mandatory; the Clean Slate Act does not exempt candidates.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive training, supervision, and opportunities for career progression
  • Ability to make meaningful differences in the lives of rangatahi
  • Chance to develop lasting community relationships

The remuneration starts between NZD 57,760 and 65,334 annually, dependent on experience, plus a 20% shift allowance applicable once the induction period is completed and a rotating roster is active. This results in an approximate total of NZD 69,312 to 78,400 yearly. Additionally, the remuneration framework includes annual step increases based on tenure.

Work Conditions

This role is not confined to traditional office hours but requires shift flexibility to meet around-the-clock care demands.
