About Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children

Oranga Tamariki is dedicated to prioritizing the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi in all its endeavors. The organization embodies core values including placing tamariki first, valuing aroha (love and compassion), respecting the mana (authority and respect) of individuals, acting with tika and pono (correctness and honesty), appreciating whakapapa (genealogy), and recognizing that wellbeing is an ongoing journey.

The vision is to ensure New Zealand is the best place in the world to be a child, working closely with hapū, iwi, and Māori organizations to create culturally appropriate outcomes for children in need.

Position Overview

The Youth Justice Coordinator role, based in Dunedin, involves managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in alignment with the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989. The position requires collaboration with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, community members, victims, police, and the Youth Court to address the root causes of offending by youth and ensure accountability while safeguarding the interests of victims and the public.

The role emphasizes adopting a mana-enhancing and restorative approach and leveraging community resources and networks to foster positive futures free from offending for tamariki and rangatahi. Occasional regional travel may be necessary.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Effectively coordinate Family Group Conferences consistent with relevant legislation and family justice standards.
  • Engage and build trusting relationships with youth aged 12 to 18 years, their families, youth justice professionals, victims, and community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strong facilitation skills to plan meetings, meet deadlines, identify services, and guide conference processes.
  • Manage workload independently with clear communication and proficient report writing.
  • Adhere to and incorporate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in daily practice.
  • Possess understanding and respect for cross-cultural practices, especially Māori tikanga and Pacific Islander cultures.
  • Maintain strong strategic community youth networks and collaborative relationships.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a permanent full-time role with a competitive salary ranging from $84,491 to $98,674 annually, dependent on experience. Employees benefit from a supportive and vibrant team environment, flexible working arrangements, comprehensive wellbeing support, and ongoing training and professional development opportunities. The organization fosters diversity and inclusion and emphasizes a respectful workplace culture.
