Junior Sister / Charge Nurse - Band 6 Orthopaedic Ward

Job Overview

We invite motivated and enthusiastic nursing professionals to join our team as a Band 6 nurse on the Treetops elective Orthopaedic ward. Treetops is a 22-bed elective Orthopaedic Unit managing patients undergoing elective orthopaedic and plastic surgery procedures. The ward operates closely with therapists and Consultants to ensure a comprehensive service. It benefits from a seasoned team of nurses and mentors and follows the evidence-based Enhanced Recovery programme to optimize patient care outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive assessments to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care independently.
• Coordinate patient discharge following Trust policies proactively.
• Maintain adherence to Trust nursing policies and procedures in clinical practice.
• Practice in alignment with the NMC Code of Conduct (2015).
• Communicate effectively and collaborate with healthcare staff as needed.
• Engage in multidisciplinary care planning encompassing patients and their families.
• Continually develop clinical skills and professional knowledge in a fast-evolving healthcare environment.
• Provide leadership and developmental guidance to nursing colleagues.
• Collaborate with Ward Matron or Senior Sister to resolve clinical competence issues.
• Contribute to handling and investigating complaints at local level.
• Prioritize tasks efficiently to manage ward operations effectively.
• Offer specialist knowledge and expertise within the ward.
• Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives to ensure evidence-based nursing care.

Qualifications and Person Specification

• Current first or second level NMC registration.
• Evidence of recent Continued Professional Development.
• Post-basic certificate in a relevant subject where applicable.
• Possession of a nursing degree or actively pursuing one.
• Completed mentorship or teaching courses.
• Leadership training is advantageous.

Skills

• Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in teaching and assessing clinical competencies.
• Proficient in advanced nursing techniques appropriate to the specialty.
• Competent in managing change and implementing improvements.

Experience and Knowledge

• Demonstrated adherence to current clinical practice standards.
• Experience conducting clinical audits.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Awareness of current professional nursing topics.
• Interest in primary/named nursing, research, and health promotion.
• Understanding of clinical governance principles including risk management and audit.
