Role overview

An opportunity has opened for a Band 6 nurse to join the Looked After Children’s service within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, supporting work across the Newport area and the wider Gwent region. The post is suited to an experienced and motivated nurse with strong knowledge of working with children, young people and their carers.

The successful candidate will assess the health needs of looked after children, whether they are based within ABUHB or outside Gwent, carrying out reviews either at the placement address or in a clinic setting. This role calls for excellent communication, thorough record keeping and the ability to work closely with a multidisciplinary team to support the protection, health and wellbeing of looked after children in line with statutory guidance, legislation, and ABUHB policies and procedures.

Main duties

  • Take professional responsibility for assessing the health needs of looked after children, including planning, delivering and reviewing the care provided.
  • Work with a high level of independence while remaining professionally accountable for decisions and actions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support the protection, health and wellbeing of children looked after in accordance with statutory guidance, legislation, and ABUHB policies and protocols.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse with experience operating at Band 6 level, or at least 5 years of experience at Band 5 level.
  • Substantial community-based experience working with children and young people.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Good knowledge of current safeguarding issues and matters relating to looked after children.
  • Strong communication and documentation ability.
  • Ability to work independently with professional accountability.
  • Desirable: additional qualifications and relevant experience.
  • Desirable: experience of multi-agency working.
  • Desirable: experience working with foster carers and looked after children/young people.
  • Desirable: prior participation in clinical supervision.
  • Desirable: IT skills.
