Job description
Position Overview
The Joseph F. Rice School of Law Library at the University of South Carolina is seeking a motivated and service-driven Law Librarian to join its academic research team. This full-time role supports approximately 60 faculty and over 640 law students, while also assisting the wider university community, South Carolina government, legal professionals, and the public. The role offers a focus in either Legal Technology or Student Engagement and Outreach.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach a mandatory first-year legal research, analysis, and writing course; potential to instruct advanced legal research or technology courses.
- Deliver reference and research assistance for law school, university members, legal practitioners, and public patrons.
- Support public library services and undertake general library tasks.
- If focused on Legal Technology: develop and maintain expertise in legal technologies including the AI Ethics & Law Initiative and Technology, Innovation, and Law Collaborative, serving as a primary resource on emerging legal technologies and AI.
- If focused on Student Engagement: design and manage programs and events enhancing law student experiences such as orientations, research and technology training, library awareness, consultations, and preparation workshops; foster strong relationships with students and student organizations; manage library communications and social media.
Qualifications
- Required: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school and a Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school, or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited M.L.S. program.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for technology, especially emerging legal technology and intersections between law and technology.
Preferred Credentials
- Prior teaching experience, particularly in legal research or legal technology.
- Experience offering legal reference services.
