Job description

Overview

Public Health Wales is recruiting a Communications Officer on a fixed-term contract for six months, ending 28 January 2027, with a possible extension through 31 March 2027 to support service demands. This role is central to the News and External Affairs team, involving the development and execution of communication campaigns, timely responses to media inquiries, and communication management during public health incidents and outbreaks. The position requires close collaboration with media representatives, local government bodies, third sector organizations, and communities across Wales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, prioritize, and develop news content for dissemination to media and Public Health Wales' digital platforms.
  • Promote evidence-based research and communicate information related to communicable diseases and health incidents.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to reactive media enquiries covering diverse public health topics.
  • Draft, write, and edit press releases, articles, publications, and digital materials.
  • Provide expert communications advice and support to colleagues and external stakeholders.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Proven excellent communication skills and understanding of media relations.
  • Experience in planning and delivering communication campaigns.
  • Welsh language skills are preferred but not mandatory; English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome.
