About the Role

This Youth Worker role is an opportunity to contribute to positive change for young people in a custodial setting. The focus is on helping them stabilise, develop better pathways, and prepare for reintegration into the community.

Key Duties

• Deliver safe, supportive, and consistent care and supervision to young people in a secure environment.
• Partner with a multidisciplinary team to carry out case management plans and program activities.
• Encourage safety, wellbeing, and respectful interactions through trauma-aware and restorative approaches.
• Use approved de-escalation and intervention methods when responding to difficult behaviours.
• Act as a constructive role model and mentor for young people as they work toward community reintegration.

Employment Conditions

This opportunity is offered as fixed-term and relief work, commencing as soon as possible for a period of up to 12 months. The role is based at Ashley Youth Detention Centre, North – Deloraine. The classification is General Stream Band 4 under the Health and Human Services (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

The salary range is $85,196 to $97,915 pro rata per year, paid as an hourly rate. In addition to salary, the role attracts 12% superannuation, a 6.5% correctional allowance, and shift work allowances. The register is reviewed regularly as needed to assess suitability against the role requirements.

Important: this register is not a vacancy. It is used to fill short-notice, urgent fixed-term needs and support business continuity. Being assessed as suitable does not guarantee an offer of employment. If selected, you will need to complete on-site training and induction before your first shift. This register does not prevent other Youth Worker roles from being advertised separately.

A Certificate IV in Youth or Community Services would be beneficial, but the priority is finding the right person for the work. The team values people from varied backgrounds who bring practical life experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain composed in demanding situations.

Essential Requirements

• Current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Employment Status) for Tasmania.
• Ability to meet the psychological suitability and physical fitness standards required for custodial youth justice work.
• Willingness to undergo psychological testing and consent to an independent medical assessment to confirm suitability.
• If successful, availability to complete six weeks of full-time paid induction training.
