Job description
Position Details and Institution
The Philipps-University of Marburg, established in 1527 and renowned for its high-quality teaching to approximately 22,000 students as well as its broad scientific research, invites applications for a part-time (65% working hours) doctoral researcher position at the Center for Synthetic Microbiology, beginning October 1, 2026.
This position is funded through the Graduate Research College (Graduiertenkolleg, GRK 2937, "MiNu"), which focuses on nucleotide metabolism in various microbial species, investigating nucleotide-based metabolic pathways and nucleotide modifications. The research aims both to uncover general principles of nucleotide metabolism and species-specific adaptations.
Research Project and Responsibilities
This doctoral project is located in the subproject dedicated to the development of macromolecular inhibitors targeting RNase E, led by Prof. Dr. Olalla Vázquez. The main goal is exploring novel chemical strategies for the targeted inhibition of RNase E.
- Independently develop and conduct a research project.
- Synthesize small molecules via multi-step chemical synthesis, a critical component of the work.
- Perform solid-phase synthesis techniques.
- Conduct biological assays including RNA cleavage tests, bacterial experiments, and protein expression procedures.
- Disseminate research findings internationally through publications and oral presentations.
- Engage in global scientific communication by participating in conferences and collaborating with research teams.
Candidate Profile
- Successfully completed academic degree (Diploma, Master’s, or equivalent) in Chemistry, Pharmacy, or Biotechnology with strong expertise in organic chemistry.
- Experienced in both solution-phase and solid-phase synthesis, particularly peptide synthesis, capable of executing complex multi-step syntheses.
- Highly motivated, inquisitive, and enthusiastic about initiating and managing a personal research project.
- Passionate team player with an interest in chemical biology.
- Preferably knowledgeable about protein inhibition, protein-ligand interactions, and medicinal chemistry.
- Commitment to pursuing a doctoral qualification focused on chemical biology within the chemistry domain.
