Job description
Role overview
Auckland Council is seeking part-time Learn to Swim Team Instructors for Takapuna Pool and Leisure Centre. The role supports the wider goal of helping more Aucklanders be active more often and contributes to making Auckland one of the most active cities in the world.
This is a permanent part-time position with a workload of 7.5 hours per week. The roster currently includes Thursday from 3:15pm to 6:45pm and Friday from 3:15pm to 7:15pm. A start time of 3:15pm is required for this role.
What you will do
You will teach the basic principles of swimming in a friendly, supportive, and safe pool environment. The position focuses on helping learners build confidence in the water while maintaining a positive experience for customers and visitors.
Training and working conditions
Full training is provided, including a two-week programme held Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. The training dates are 28 September to 9 October 2026. The role involves extended time in the water, working in a warm and humid pool setting, and regular contact with chlorinated water.

About you
You should be a strong swimmer who feels comfortable and confident in the water. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator with solid customer service skills and enjoys working with people from diverse backgrounds. A genuine interest in teaching and helping the community is important.
Previous experience as a swimming instructor or a recognised swim teaching qualification is welcome but not required. You must also be willing to complete First Aid training, which is provided.

Additional information
The official role title is Team Member. The advertised hourly pay rate is NZD 28.95 per hour.
This role is classified as a Children's Worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. Successful applicants must undergo police vetting before starting work, and appointment is subject to a satisfactory police check. The position is also safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug testing.
