About the Role

Auckland Council seeks a Senior Animal Shelter Officer (Operations) to lead and oversee the efficient functioning of the Henderson Animal Shelter. This leadership role involves managing the welfare and assessment of impounded dogs, handling all related financial dealings, and ensuring adherence to the Dog Control Act 1996 as well as other relevant legislation such as the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and the Impound Act 1955.

Key Duties

  • Lead and provide guidance to Animal Shelter Officer staff ensuring high standards of animal care and team performance.
  • Oversee release procedures for impounded dogs and communicate relevant legislation to dog owners.
  • Manage day-to-day shelter operations, including financial and administrative tasks.
  • Initiate and implement operational improvements to enhance the shelter's effectiveness and animal welfare.
  • Respond proactively to emergencies and support shelter crisis management as needed.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership and operational management expertise with at least five years of similar experience. They should have a quick aptitude for learning animal management standards, excellent communication and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to interpret and enforce relevant laws. Experience working with databases and financial systems is essential, alongside skills to train and support the shelter staff effectively.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven leadership experience and advanced operational oversight capabilities.
  • Preferred qualifications in animal management, veterinary care, or related fields.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, permanent position requiring a 40-hour workweek from Tuesday to Saturday, 7:45 am to 4:15 pm. The role is based on-site in Auckland and is classified as safety-sensitive, requiring a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

Compensation and Benefits

Annual remuneration ranges between $76,000 and $89,000 NZD, inclusive of KiwiSaver and other employee benefits.
