An opportunity has opened in the Newport musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy teams at Royal Gwent Hospital and St Woolos Hospital for a motivated clinician who brings a progressive mindset, strong communication, and a collaborative approach. The role suits someone who is comfortable working within a specialist MSK setting, values evidence-based practice, and uses shared decision-making with patients.

You will manage your own musculoskeletal caseload independently, while still drawing on guidance from senior clinicians and mentors when needed.

What you will do

The outpatient physiotherapy teams in Newport are experienced and supportive, and they are committed to developing services for the local community.

• Manage a varied MSK outpatient caseload within the specialty.
• Work closely with administration colleagues and other department staff.
• Contribute to service development and ongoing improvement.
• Take part in local and Health Board-wide learning opportunities, including core and advanced skills training.
• Join speciality forums, clinical audit activity, research, supervision, and mentoring.
• Participate in annual appraisal and development planning through the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
• Support the teaching and mentoring of rotational staff and physiotherapy students on placement from Cardiff University and the University of South Wales.

Skills, knowledge and experience

The successful candidate should have a solid grounding in core musculoskeletal physiotherapy and the confidence to reason through both routine and complex clinical situations.

• Ability to explain clinical reasoning for routine and complex cases.
• Skill in spotting and responding appropriately to adverse clinical signs.
• Understanding of relevant national clinical guidance.
• Strong verbal and written communication for working with colleagues, professionals, patients, and families.
• Comfortable working effectively as part of a team.
• Shows initiative and good judgement.
• Well organised with sound time management.
• Understanding of clinical governance and its role in physiotherapy.
• Awareness of the NHS and the pressures affecting physiotherapy services.
• Ability to critically appraise evidence and practice.
• Ongoing professional development aligned with regulatory requirements.

Additional desirable experience includes teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, involvement in audit, and IT literacy.

Experience

• Broad clinical exposure gained through a full Band 5 rotation.
• Experience delivering and contributing to in-service training.
• Varied clinical experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
• Experience supervising staff.

Desirable experience includes working in the UK as a registered physiotherapist, working independently, participation in on-call and seven-day service provision where relevant, and prior Band 6 experience.

Qualifications

• Physiotherapy diploma or degree.
• Registration with the Health Professions Council.
• Relevant postgraduate education or training.
• MCSP is desirable.

Other requirements

• Physical capability to carry out the manual handling demands of the post.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing work routines.
• Ability to travel between Health Board sites as required.
