Safety Supervisor - Half Moon Cay (Bahamas)

Role Overview

This position is part of the HESS team at a Carnival Corporation-owned and operated global destination. The Safety Supervisor is responsible for overseeing occupational health and safety activities at the port, making sure requirements are met through day-to-day implementation, field checks, and hands-on supervision. The role also involves guiding a frontline team, coordinating training, tracking safety performance, and supporting a safe working environment.

Occupational Health and Safety

• Support the HESS Manager in building and rolling out workplace health and safety programs that meet internal standards and regulatory expectations.
• Help strengthen safety performance by contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
• Assist with hazard reporting, risk evaluation, incident prevention measures, and emergency response planning.
• Support change-management reviews to evaluate safety impacts from changes in processes, equipment, materials, or structure, and confirm controls are in place before work begins.
• Help manage the permit-to-work process for higher-risk activities such as hot work, confined space work, work at height, and lockout/tagout, including field verification and permit closure records.
• Support contractor safety compliance through pre-qualification, onboarding, supervision, and performance checks.
• Coordinate safety induction for new hires and facilitate toolbox talks and safety briefings with supervisors.
• Oversee chemical safety practices, including SDS handling, labeling, storage compatibility, and readiness for spill response.
• Track occupational safety objectives and KPIs with the joint committee.

Safety Inspections and Workplace Observations

• Carry out planned inspections to spot unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviors, then issue reports and recommend corrective measures in a timely manner.
• Check that emergency equipment, alarms, communications systems, PPE, and medical supplies are available, in good condition, properly maintained, and compliant with inspection and calibration requirements.
• Observe work activities to assess safe work practices, identify risky behaviors, confirm procedure compliance, and provide immediate coaching where needed.

Leadership and Team Supervision

• Direct team members by allocating tasks, monitoring output, offering practical support, and ensuring procedures are followed.
• Provide oversight and audit support for other teams to confirm compliance.
• Work with area supervisors to plan, schedule, and deliver on-the-job training for new team members.
• Support educational efforts for staff and stakeholders on environmental protection and the port’s efforts to preserve natural resources.

Fire Safety

• Take part in fire drills and exercises and help coordinate them.
• Support inspections and maintenance checks for fire safety systems and equipment, including extinguishers, alarms, and sprinklers.
• Work with Security, Maintenance, and other departments to keep fire safety procedures aligned and emergency coordination effective.
• Assist with fire safety awareness and training programs for employees and contractors.
• Record fire safety findings, activities, and follow-up actions.

Safety Communication and Engagement

• Work with the HESS Manager to engage stakeholders and promote safety culture through campaigns, training, and partnerships with suppliers, regulators, and community groups.
• Design and deliver safety training for employees and contractors as needed.
• Coordinate with other departments to ensure safety is built into daily operations.
• Keep complete records of training dates, session summaries, attendee names and signatures, departments represented, and exam scores when applicable.

PPE and Equipment Control

• Ensure PPE and safety equipment are issued appropriately, used correctly, and documented properly.

Incident Reporting and Investigation

• Maintain thorough records of safety incidents and related documentation.
• Create action plans to address issues found during audits, inspections, or investigations and help drive sustainable solutions.
• Investigate workplace accidents and near misses according to company procedures.
• Report safety issues or failures related to ship or land operations to the HESS Manager and support root-cause analysis.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

• Develop, maintain, and apply site-specific emergency readiness plans covering hazard identification, risk assessment, incident prevention, and response procedures in line with corporate HESS standards and regulations.
• Coordinate and run emergency drills and exercises for scenarios such as fire, medical events, evacuation, spills, and natural disasters.
• Coach employees and contractors on emergency responsibilities, evacuation routes, and how to use emergency equipment such as extinguishers, first aid kits, and spill kits.
• Lead after-action reviews after drills or real incidents, document lessons learned, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Keep emergency communication protocols current, including contact lists, notification channels, and escalation steps, in coordination with Security and other teams.
• Work with other HESS functions to support a coordinated approach to emergency preparedness and environmental protection.

Additional Duties

• Recommend improvements and help update HESS policies and procedures.
• Support administrative tasks such as scheduling, permits, vacation tracking, payroll, departmental software handling, and incident reporting.
• Perform other supervisory tasks assigned by the HESS Manager.
• Complete performance evaluations in line with HR policy.
• Maintain and review statistical reports and key indicators.
• Ensure operational inventory is monitored and replenished on time.
• Follow company policies and procedures.
• Assist with service visits from contracted HESS-related vendors.
• Identify equipment or facility issues and escalate maintenance needs.

Skills and Knowledge

This role calls for strong knowledge of safety regulations and recognized frameworks such as ISO 45001, NEBOSH, and NIOSH. The ideal candidate should be able to build and monitor safety programs, handle audits and investigations, produce clear reports, lead teams effectively, communicate well, solve problems quickly, and work both independently and with others in a busy operational setting.

Education and Experience

A formal degree is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates with extensive safety management experience or recognized certifications in areas such as ISO 45001, NEBOSH, or NIOSH will also be considered. The role typically requires 2 to 4 years of experience in safety management and compliance, ideally in cruise, hospitality, port, or industrial environments, plus at least 1 year of supervisory or team leadership experience.

Language Requirements

Applicants must be able to read and write English well enough to understand procedures, give and receive instructions, and present information clearly to guests, managers, and colleagues. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are also required.

Physical Requirements

The role requires good physical fitness, the ability to work outdoors when needed, and the capacity to stand for extended periods.

Other Requirements

Candidates should have strong organizational and time-management ability, be comfortable multitasking, and show a proactive, detail-focused approach to problem-solving. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data entry and reporting tools are required. Strong critical thinking, decision-making, planning, and coordination skills are important, especially when handling multiple priorities under tight deadlines. The position may require shift-based work at any destination.
