Job description

Position Overview

The University of Marburg, established in 1527 and hosting approximately 22,000 students, seeks to address critical scientific topics through outstanding research. The Department of Chemistry is inviting applications for a Research Assistant (Postdoc) role under the guidance of Prof. Dr. O. Vázquez. This full-time, fixed-term position of two years starts October 1, 2026, subject to funding, and is compensated according to the public service salary scale in Hessen (TV-H E 13).

Project Context

This role is part of the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 440 (TRR 440) consortium, a joint initiative of the Universities of Frankfurt and Marburg funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project aims to innovate efficient methods to rapidly create photo-switchable small-molecule libraries via multicomponent reactions targeting pre-mRNA splicing modulation. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to synthesizing small molecules for other consortium projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific research and teaching services.
  • Initiate and develop research independently.
  • Design and perform complex organic syntheses of photosensitive compounds, particularly photoswitches involving multicomponent reactions.
  • Conduct photochemical characterization including quantum yield measurements and lifetime analysis.
  • Perform conjugation procedures using solid-phase synthesis techniques.
  • Identify compounds analytically and support biological characterization through cell-based and binding assays.
  • Communicate scientific results effectively in an international setting, both orally and in writing.
  • Supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students and contribute to teaching activities.

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree or equivalent plus a PhD in Chemistry emphasizing Organic Chemistry or Synthetic Chemical Biology/Bioorganic Chemistry.
  • Strong theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in organic chemistry, particularly dye chemistry.
  • Interest in photochemistry and biological processes at an atomic scale.
  • Experience with photocharacterization and biological methodologies is desirable.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven individual capable of working collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
  • Willingness to pursue further scientific qualifications.

Conditions and Terms

The contract is temporary for the duration necessary to gain further scientific expertise, conforming to German Academic Fixed-Term Contract law (WissZeitVG). The role provides opportunities for independent research and professional development.
