About the Role

HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) is seeking an Operational Support Grade (OSG) for HMP Wayland in Mundford, England. This is a full-time, onsite position. As an OSG, you will be integral to the daily operations of a busy prison, contributing to security, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring communications. The role is dynamic, involving both desk-based tasks and physical activities like lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles within the prison grounds. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge of prison operations and potential pathways to other roles within the prison service, including a conversion scheme to become a Prison Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day functioning of a busy prison environment.
  • Conduct security checks and searches at the prison gate.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing deliveries.
  • Supervise visitor interactions.
  • Monitor phone calls and CCTV feeds.
  • Perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles.
  • Undertake various shifts, including weekends and nights.

Requirements

  • No formal qualifications are required.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Good judgment and common sense.
  • Excellent teamwork capabilities.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • A driving licence and personal transport are beneficial but not mandatory unless specified.
  • Candidates must be able to reliably commute to HMP Wayland and ensure punctuality for all shifts.
