Job description
Role overview
HMP Bullingdon is hiring an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently each day. This role is varied and active, combining desk-based duties with hands-on tasks across the site.
You may be involved in security checks at the gate, searching, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job also includes physical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles around the prison grounds.
Working location and travel
This establishment is in a rural area where public transport options may be limited. Having a driving licence and your own transport may make commuting easier, although this is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time for every shift.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The position is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed when things get busy, uses sound judgement, applies common sense, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role that could be a strong starting point for a long-term career.
Shift pattern
You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including weekends and nights, to support continuous prison operations.
Career development
This role offers a close look at how a prison functions and can build valuable experience and understanding of the prison environment. It may also create pathways into other prison roles, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and have access to progression and development opportunities. Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits, and several employee support and savings schemes.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
