Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is seeking an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison running safely and efficiently. This is a varied, hands-on position within a supportive team, combining security checks, visitor management, delivery handling, monitoring duties, and other essential day-to-day support work.

What the role involves

  • Carry out security checks and searches at the gate.
  • Receive and manage deliveries.
  • Supervise visitors when required.
  • Monitor phone calls and CCTV feeds.
  • Perform a mix of desk-based duties and active tasks, including lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles around the prison site.

Who this role suits

This post is well suited to someone who can communicate clearly, stay composed in demanding situations, use sound judgement, and work well as part of a team. No formal qualifications are needed to begin.

Working pattern and travel

The job includes a range of shifts, covering weekends and nights. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so reliable punctuality is essential. The establishment is in a rural location with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own vehicle is helpful, though not mandatory unless specifically required. Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement, allowing the driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Career development

Working in this role gives you practical insight into how a prison operates and can open doors to other prison-based jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the organisation offers training, development opportunities, and a benefits package that includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support, and several employee perks.

Additional terms and conditions

  • Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
  • You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
  • There is access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Benefits also include the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
