Job description

Role Overview

HMP Bullingdon is looking for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep daily prison operations organised, safe, and efficient. This is a varied, active position that blends desk-based tasks with hands-on duties, and it plays an important part in supporting the wider prison team.

What the Role Involves

You will contribute to the smooth running of the establishment through a range of operational support activities. These may include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work can also involve physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.

Working Pattern and Travel

This role involves shift work, including nights and weekends. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from the site punctually. The prison is in a rural location with limited public transport, so having your own vehicle or a driving licence is helpful, though not normally mandatory unless stated otherwise.

Driving Licence Requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

Who This Role Suits

No formal qualifications are required. This job may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressurised situations, uses sound judgement, and works confidently as part of a team. It offers a fast-paced environment and can be a stepping stone into a longer-term career in prison services.

Career Development

Although prison officers have a broader prisoner-facing remit, contact with prisoners in this role is limited, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the site. The position can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and Benefits

You will receive strong training and development support, along with opportunities to progress. The package also includes annual leave, bank and public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support, and a range of staff discounts and wellbeing schemes.

Pay

The base salary for this position is £29,432.

Additional Benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
