Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a challenging, fast-moving role where you will help protect the public while supporting people in custody to make better choices and move forward in life.

The position offers a salary of £35,746 to £40,003 and is suited to people with integrity, resilience, strong communication skills and the confidence to work in a demanding environment.

What the role involves

No two days will feel the same in this job. Depending on the situation, you may need to act as a peacekeeper, a guide, a counsellor or an educator. You will work directly with prisoners and contribute to maintaining a safe environment for staff, offenders and the wider public.

The work is highly people-focused and relies on building respectful, professional and constructive relationships with offenders, including those at very difficult points in their lives.

Who this role suits

The prison service welcomes people from many different backgrounds. Whether your experience comes from parenting, teaching, retail or the armed forces, you may already have the empathy, self-belief and communication ability needed for the role.

Because teamwork is essential, you must be committed to supporting colleagues and working together to keep the prison safe and secure.

Working pattern

You must be available to work rotating shifts and weekends.

Training, growth and rewards

You will receive strong training and have access to development opportunities, including the chance to build expertise in different areas over time.

The role also comes with a competitive salary and a benefits package that includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Why people choose this career

Alongside the formal benefits, the role offers a strong sense of purpose and the satisfaction of helping someone take steps towards rebuilding their life.
