Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Long Lartin. This is a fast-moving public protection role where you help keep the prison safe, support rehabilitation, and make a constructive difference to people’s lives.

The role suits someone with strong character, sound judgement, empathy, and clear communication. The work is varied, and no two days are the same.

Who this role suits

Applications are welcome from people with different backgrounds, including those who have worked in parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces. What matters most is that you can relate to people professionally, show confidence, and work with fairness and respect.

You will need to build positive, professional relationships with prisoners, including those who may be at a very difficult point in their lives.

What the job involves

Prison officers may take on several different responsibilities during a single shift. On one day you may be maintaining order and safety, and at other times you may support, advise, or guide prisoners in a coaching or mentoring capacity.

Teamwork is essential in this environment. You must be committed to working closely with colleagues and contributing to the safety of prisoners, staff, and the wider prison community.

Working pattern

This position requires flexible shift working, including weekends.

Training, progression and rewards

You will receive training and development support, along with opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas over time.

Benefits include 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

The role also offers strong salary prospects and the personal satisfaction of helping people get their lives back on track.

How to apply

If you believe you have the qualities needed for the role, you should apply.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
