Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Bullingdon. This role is central to the daily smooth running of a busy prison and involves a mix of desk-based work and hands-on duties.
The work is active and varied, and you will support prison operations across security, visitor management, deliveries, gate checks, call monitoring and CCTV observation. The position also includes practical tasks such as lifting, carrying and walking escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
What the job involves
- Carrying out security checks and searches at the gate
- Managing incoming deliveries and related movements
- Overseeing visitors and maintaining control procedures
- Monitoring phone usage and CCTV feeds
- Handling a blend of office tasks and physically active duties
Transport and location considerations
The prison is in a rural area where public transport can be limited. A driving licence and access to your own transport would be helpful, though they are not mandatory unless specifically required for the post. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to get to work punctually for every shift. Please think carefully about the location and how you will travel before applying.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed for this position. It may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed when pressure builds, and works effectively in a fast-moving environment. Sound judgement, practical common sense and a strong team mindset are essential.
Working pattern
You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous prison operations.
Career development
This role offers a chance to build valuable insight into prison operations and develop experience that can support future progression into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and benefits
You will receive training as well as development opportunities to support progression in the role. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access and a range of Civil Service benefits.
Additional pay and benefits
- 25 days of annual leave at the start of employment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
Compensation
The role pays £29,432 per year.
