Job description

Role overview

HM Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Bullingdon. This role supports the smooth, safe, day-to-day operation of a busy prison and suits someone who is calm, practical, and comfortable working in a fast-moving environment.

What the job involves

You will help with a wide mix of operational tasks, combining desk-based work with active duties across the prison site. The role includes security checks, searching at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone use and CCTV.

The work can also be physically demanding at times, including lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds. You will work as part of a supportive team and may have limited contact with prisoners, although occasional interaction can happen depending on the establishment.

Working pattern and travel

This post involves a range of shifts, including nights and weekends. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive on time for every shift. The prison is in a rural area, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not essential unless a specific site requirement applies.

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.

Career development

This position offers a practical introduction to prison operations and can build valuable experience for future progression within the prison service. It may also open the door to other roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and support

You will receive training and access to development opportunities to help you grow in the role and progress over time.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432.

  • 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme

About you

You do not need formal qualifications for this post. Strong communication skills, the ability to stay composed under pressure, sound judgement, common sense, and a team-focused approach will help you succeed.

Additional information

This is an extraordinary role where you can contribute to public safety by supporting essential work inside the prison system.

It is a fast-paced position that requires reliability, flexibility, and a willingness to take on varied duties.
