Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill, part of His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role is focused on helping the prison operate safely and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. It is active and varied, combining office-based tasks with practical duties such as lifting, carrying, escorting people to vehicles, and moving around the prison site.
The salary for this post is £29,432.
Main duties
You will support the smooth running of a busy prison by handling a range of operational tasks. These can include security checks and searches at the entrance, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and observing phone use and CCTV footage. The work environment is fast-paced and requires adaptability across different duties.
What the role involves
This job is part of a team-based environment where you will help maintain safety and order. While contact with prisoners is generally limited compared with prison officers, some interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
The post also offers valuable insight into how a prison functions and may create future opportunities to move into other prison roles, including the possibility of applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Candidate profile
No formal qualifications are needed for this position. The ideal applicant communicates well, stays composed in stressful situations, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. Because the role involves regular shift work, you should be comfortable working days, nights, and weekends.
A full and valid UK driving licence is required, as driving responsibilities are an essential part of the job at HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill.
Training and development
The employer provides training as well as opportunities to grow professionally and develop your career.
Pay and benefits
Alongside base pay, the role includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis. You will also receive 9 bank, public and privilege holidays.
Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to public safety by supporting important work carried out in prison settings every day. If this sounds like the right fit, you are encouraged to apply.
