Job description

Role Overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a demanding, people-focused position where you will help protect the public while supporting prisoners in making constructive changes to their lives. The pay range for the post is £35,746 to £40,003.

About the Opportunity

This role suits someone with resilience, sound judgement, and a strong sense of integrity. Every day can look different, and the work offers scope to grow over time into a wider range of responsibilities and development opportunities.

Who This Role Suits

The service welcomes applicants from many different backgrounds. Experience from fields such as parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces may translate well, especially where it has helped build empathy, confidence, and communication skills. The job calls for the ability to form respectful, professional, and constructive relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives.

Working Environment

Teamwork is essential in this setting. You will be expected to work closely with colleagues, act as part of one coordinated team, and contribute to the safety of the prison, prisoners, and staff. The role also requires availability for a variety of shifts, including weekends.

What the Job Involves

Prison officers take on a varied set of duties across the day. In one moment you may need to de-escalate a situation, and in another you may be supporting, guiding, or educating prisoners. The work is directly connected to rehabilitation, public protection, and maintaining order in a secure environment.

Training and Career Growth

You will receive structured training and have access to development opportunities, including the option to move into specialist areas as your experience grows.

Benefits and Rewards

Along with the salary, the role includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme. The work also offers the satisfaction of helping someone make positive progress and rebuild their life.
