Job description
Role overview
HM Prison and Probation Service is recruiting for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin. This is an active, varied position that helps ensure the prison runs safely and efficiently each day.
The role combines desk-based tasks with hands-on duties such as lifting, carrying, moving between areas of the site, and escorting vehicles across the prison grounds. It is part of a team environment where security, control and day-to-day support are all important.
What you will do
- Carry out security-related duties at the gate, including checks and searches.
- Handle incoming deliveries and help manage their movement through the prison.
- Supervise visitors and support controlled access to the establishment.
- Monitor phone activity and CCTV where required.
- Support the general running of the prison through a mix of administrative and physical tasks.
Working pattern and location considerations
This post is based at HMP Long Lartin in Atch Lench, England, United Kingdom. Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated for the post.
Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive on time for every shift. The rota includes a range of shifts, including nights and weekends.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays composed when pressure is high. Good judgement, practical common sense and a strong team ethic are essential.
This position offers an opportunity to build experience in the prison system, learn how a prison operates, and explore progression into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training, progression and benefits
You will receive training along with opportunities to develop and progress within the service.
Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Compensation
The annual salary is £29,432.
