Role Overview

The People and Culture Manager position is a full-time role based onsite in Auckland. This role requires candidates to have legal work eligibility in New Zealand prior to application. The successful applicant will be part of a team of six, reporting directly to the Director of People and Culture, and will play a pivotal role in steering people management strategies affecting over 450 employees in a dynamic hospitality setting. This position demands an active leader who is ready to engage hands-on with team members and cross-departmental stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily People and Culture functions and act as deputy for the Director when required.
  • Advise and assist Department Heads, Managers, and employees on various People and Culture matters.
  • Manage recruitment processes, retention strategies, and workforce planning to align with organizational goals and employee satisfaction.
  • Handle colleague grievances, performance issues, disciplinary actions, and employment relations with fairness and compliance.
  • Interpret collective agreements, liaise with unions, and manage employment-related concerns as necessary.
  • Develop, evaluate, and communicate People and Culture policies and procedures to ensure uniform practices.
  • Coordinate reporting on turnover, hiring, departures, exit feedback, recruitment activities, and sustainability efforts.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting, job descriptions, remuneration structures, and benefits management.
  • Promote colleague engagement, recognition programs, well-being initiatives, and implement survey feedback action plans.
  • Support and potentially lead sustainability initiatives including EarthCheck certification and related reporting.
  • Facilitate learning and development programs, performance appraisal tracking, and team skill enhancement.
  • Mentor and coach the People and Culture team, maintaining confidentiality and professional ethics.

Candidate Profile

  • Previous managerial or senior advisory experience in People and Culture, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Comprehensive understanding of New Zealand’s employment laws, relations principles, and HR best practices.
  • Proven ability to counsel managers on performance management, complaint resolution, and disciplinary procedures.
  • A self-starting leadership approach with a sincere willingness to mentor and empower colleagues.
  • Hands-on mentality prepared to actively support team operations and hotel-wide functions when necessary.
  • Proactive, confident in prioritization and execution of responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build trust with managers, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with professional presentation abilities.
  • High levels of integrity, judgment, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills balanced with meticulous attention to detail and effectiveness in multitasking.
  • Enthusiasm for sustainability and willingness to lead related projects.
  • Positive attitude complemented by a good sense of humor to maintain morale during busy periods.
