The Department of Justice Queensland is inviting applications for Legal Support Officers to assist in the administration and clerical workload that supports legal proceedings. About the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
The ODPP plays a crucial role in Queensland's judiciary by prosecuting criminal cases in multiple courts, including the High Court of Australia, ensuring legal integrity and accountability in complex matters.
Employment Details
These positions are part of an ongoing recruitment initiative to fill permanent and fixed-term legal chamber vacancies within the ODPP. Initial contract terms range between three to six months with the possibility of extension, and applications will be held for consideration over a 12-month period. Submission of an application does not guarantee an interview or appointment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Legal Officers and Crown Prosecutors administratively in preparing case briefs for trials and sentencing.
- Secure additional witness statements, order criminal background checks, and coordinate with arresting officers for further information and court listings.
- Maintain communication and correspondence with police, legal professionals, and court personnel.
- Handle court-filed documents and maintain proper documentation records.
- Keep an accurate and reliable tracking system for all matters processed within the Chambers.
- Arrange subpoena services efficiently and sensitively inform victims and witnesses.
- Participate in state-wide court circuits lasting up to three weeks as needed.
Required Skills and Attributes
- Strong organizational and administrative capabilities with the ability to independently manage priorities and adapt to a fast-paced workload.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interaction with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient computer use, particularly Microsoft Office applications.
- Integrity in professional conduct, with an understanding and respect for cultural diversity and inclusion fostered through client-facing experiences.
Preferred Expertise
- Familiarity with criminal and mental health court procedures or a willingness to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- Highly motivated, meticulous with strong attention to detail.
