Job description

About Tyro

Tyro builds integrated payment, banking, and lending products that help Australian businesses operate more smoothly. With more than 21 years in the market, the company combines people, technology, and partner ecosystems to simplify payments and business banking for customers across hospitality, retail, services, and health. Tyro supports over 76,000 merchants and works with nearly 800 partners.

The organisation describes itself as collaborative, fast-moving, and innovative, with a strong focus on customer success and a culture built around commitment, curiosity, customer obsession, teamwork, and excellence. It offers room to grow, opportunities to learn on the job, and the chance to make a meaningful impact.

Role summary

The Head of Banking is responsible for leading Tyro’s banking business end to end, including ownership of the banking P&L, delivery of the banking strategy, product direction, customer experience, and go-to-market execution. This role manages a team of product managers and partners closely with technology, growth, risk, finance, marketing, sales, compliance, treasury, and operations to scale the banking business.

The banking proposition is already live and expanding, and the incoming leader is expected to sharpen and evolve the existing plan with a strong commercial point of view and a clear vision for building a differentiated SME banking offering.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the banking business unit’s profit and loss, including gross profit, expense management, and multi-year financial planning with finance partners.
  • Shape the future of Tyro’s banking proposition by deciding which products to prioritise, in what order, and for which customer segments.
  • Challenge and refine the current strategy using market knowledge, customer insight, commercial analysis, and data-led judgment.
  • Focus investment on the smallest set of high-impact product initiatives and maintain discipline when competing priorities emerge.
  • Set the product strategy for the banking offer, including value proposition, target segments, and commercial priorities to support marketing plans.
  • Work with marketing and sales to embed product priorities and roadmaps into positioning, campaign planning, messaging, and channel decisions.
  • Contribute product expertise to integrated marketing activity while ensuring consistency with the Tyro masterbrand.
  • Lead a team of 3 to 5 product managers responsible for digitally delivered banking products.
  • Establish strong standards for product quality, prioritisation, journey design, and performance measurement.
  • Coordinate with the wider product organisation to create a joined-up customer experience across payments and banking.
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership using clear commercial and product performance metrics.
  • Present the banking strategy, results, and outlook to the board and executive team with confidence.
  • Build trusted partnerships with risk, compliance, finance, and go-to-market leaders, influencing outcomes without direct authority.
  • Represent the banking business internally and externally with credibility and conviction.
  • Manage relationships and contracts with external partners needed to deliver the digital banking strategy.
  • Track performance against key indicators, including financial outcomes, customer growth, roadmap delivery, team health, and regulatory compliance.

What you bring

  • Experience owning a banking or fintech P&L, ideally in a challenger or high-growth environment where you helped define the commercial model.
  • Strong understanding of SME or retail banking products such as deposits, lending, and transaction accounts.
  • Broad banking literacy across risk, compliance, treasury, and operations, with the ability to engage meaningfully even if those functions are not directly owned.
  • Background in strategic marketing within financial services, including turning products into market-ready growth plays.
  • Proven product leadership experience, including managing product managers and setting high standards for digital product and customer journey design.
  • Solid commercial capability, including budget ownership, forecast building, and data-driven prioritisation.
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to influence senior stakeholders, challenge assumptions, and communicate clearly in board-level settings.

Performance expectations

  • Delivery of banking P&L results against quarterly and annual plan targets.
  • Growth in banking customer acquisition, activation, and product adoption.
  • Credible multi-year budgeting and forecasting for board and finance review.
  • Execution of the product roadmap with improved customer experience and less friction in user journeys.
  • Healthy team capability, engagement, and retention across the banking product group.
  • Full compliance of Tyro banking products with applicable financial and consumer regulations.

Benefits and workplace culture

  • Hybrid working model with three days per week in the office.
  • Access to learning and career development opportunities.
  • 18 weeks of paid leave for primary carers.
  • 12 weeks of paid leave for secondary carers.
  • Annual team volunteer day.
  • Birthday leave.
  • An additional leave day called Power Up Day.
  • Weekly team social activities, plus snacks, craft beer, wine, ping pong, and video games.
  • Taco Tuesdays.
  • Mental health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Novated leasing.

Inclusion and application note

Tyro promotes an inclusive workplace and welcomes people from all backgrounds. The company is an equal opportunity employer and can provide recruitment accommodations or adjustments if needed. Applicants who meet some, but not all, of the listed criteria are still encouraged to apply, as the team is open to considering strong future-fit candidates as well.
