Located on an 11-acre academic cancer campus in Irvine, CA, it houses the Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, the region's only cancer specialty hospital, and an outpatient center. Opening a new hospital in late 2025, City of Hope offers comprehensive cancer care including prevention, treatment, survivorship, and innovative clinical trials, eliminating the need for patients to travel for critical treatments.

Role Overview

As a vital member of a multidisciplinary team, the Genetic Counselor will deliver detailed information about genetic factors and associated cancer risks to patients and their families, coordinate genetic testing services, and offer emotional support. Additionally, participation in the domains of clinical care, education, and research is expected. Spanish language proficiency is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Gather comprehensive family medical histories from both maternal and paternal sides.
• Obtain and analyze medical records for affected family members.
• Assess pedigrees to identify hereditary cancer and cardiovascular syndromes.
• Apply established models to estimate genetic and empirical cancer and cardiovascular risks.
• Facilitate informed consent discussions covering benefits, confidentiality, privacy, and potential discrimination related to genetic information.
• Educate patients on medical and psychological implications of cancer risk and genetic testing.
• Advise attending physicians on laboratory selection, testing coordination, and interpretation of genetic test outcomes.
• Under physician guidance, provide patient education regarding appropriate screening and management of risks.
• Conduct psychosocial assessments alongside attending physicians.
• Deliver post-testing counseling, support, and education.
• Dictate medical consultation reports for session documentation and test result disclosures.
• Lead and engage in case conferences.
• Respond to inquiries regarding genetic counseling and testing from patients and the general public.
• Participate in educational training of students, including genetic counseling interns and fellows.
• Comply with research requirements and support informed consent processes for research registries.
• Collect and enter data for clinical research projects and attend research meetings.
• Offer critical feedback and participate in intensive course workshops and weekly update conferences relevant to genetic counseling education.

Required Qualifications

• Master of Science in Genetic Counseling with ABGC certification, or MSN/MN with APRN license.
• A minimum of two years' experience in genetic counseling, including at least one year focused on cancer genetics.
• Completed specialized coursework and clinical training in cancer genetics.
• Hold permanent Genetic Counseling Licensure/Certification issued by the California Department of Public Health or equivalent; or able to obtain such licensure within six months of hire.
• Experience with electronic medical record systems such as Epic, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with FamGenix software (preferred).
