Overview
The Irish Cancer Society is seeking a dedicated Cancer Nurse for a fixed-term contract based in Cork, Ireland. The position involves working primarily at Cork University Hospital and Bons Secours Hospital, supporting individuals affected by cancer through diverse functions including patient education, emotional support, and community outreach. This role requires expertise in cancer care and the capacity to manage complex patient needs while collaborating with multiple healthcare and support teams.
Working Hours and Location
This role requires attendance on Thursdays and Fridays from 08:00 to 16:00, totaling 14 hours per week. Additional variable hours may be necessary to cover other Daffodil Centres, Support Line services, or cancer awareness events.
Role and Reporting
Reporting to the Team Lead of Daffodil Centres and the Community Hospital Services Manager, this role acts as a vital liaison between the Irish Cancer Society services and hospital-based clinical teams.
Compensation
The full-time equivalent salary for this role is €56,600 per annum, with a pro-rata payment of €22,640 based on the part-time hours.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert cancer-related information, advice, and emotional support to patients, carers, healthcare professionals, and the public through multiple communication channels, including face-to-face, phone, email, and written correspondence.
- Refer individuals to appropriate Irish Cancer Society services or external healthcare providers according to established protocols.
- Deliver educational programs for patients locally and online.
- Assist in handling complaints and incident reporting following organizational policies.
- Serve as an information resource to multidisciplinary hospital teams regarding available supports and cancer services.
- Participate in educational and awareness events such as workshops, conferences, and exhibitions.
- Collaborate with managers to develop and maintain high-quality Daffodil Centre operations, including volunteer management and resource maintenance.
- Record and report detailed statistics on centre activities, patient engagement, and service satisfaction.
- Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on cancer care advances and available resources.
Additional Duties
Support Line: Provide confidential, evidence-based support via phone, video, email, and digital platforms, maintaining strict confidentiality and anonymity.
Cancer Awareness: Collaborate with the Cancer Awareness team to promote early detection and prevention through community roadshows, health checks, and advice on lifestyle changes and screening.
Candidate Profile
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively support patients, colleagues, volunteers, and healthcare professionals.
- Strong communication abilities tailored to a variety of audiences and platforms.
- Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities.
- Technologically proficient, particularly with Microsoft platforms and digital tools relevant to healthcare program management.
- Flexible and willing to travel occasionally to support organizational events and cover additional responsibilities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Registered General Nurse on the active Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland register.
- Post-registration qualification in cancer nursing.
- At least three years of recent cancer nursing experience.
- Demonstrated leadership, clinical knowledge, and organizational capability aligned with this role.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
