Job description
Position Overview
Sunnybrook is seeking a Genetic Counsellor to join its Cancer Genetics and High Risk Program in a casual capacity. The counsellor will work within a regional initiative focused on identifying families predisposed to hereditary cancers such as breast, ovarian, melanoma, colorectal, and other gastrointestinal cancers. This role requires independent operation as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver clinical counselling services, assist individuals and families, facilitate navigation through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) for Women at High Risk, support research activities, and contribute to educational outreach.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide clinical genetic counselling to patients and their families concerning cancer predisposition.
- Support patients’ access and navigation within OBSP tailored for high-risk women.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects related to hereditary cancers.
- Deliver educational programs and materials relevant to genetic counselling and cancer risk.
Qualifications and Skills
- Master's degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counselling.
- Board certified or eligible with Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) or American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).
- Proven experience in cancer genetic counselling with current knowledge of developments in the field.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Breast Screening Program for Women at High Risk.
- Strong organizational and leadership capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and interpersonal.
- Proficient computer skills, including use of databases, spreadsheets, and preferably Progeny software.
- Experience preparing submissions for Research Ethics Boards (REBs).
