Job description

Role overview

This role involves assessing students’ answers for GCSE English Language (2015 specification) using the approved marking guidance. Marking must be carried out in line with recognition rules and exam procedures. Most papers are scored digitally through ePEN, which can be completed from home, while some subjects are still marked using paper scripts that are posted out. A strong command of the subject is essential so the mark scheme can be applied accurately. Each examiner is assigned a specific set of scripts to review.

Key responsibilities

  • Apply the mark scheme carefully and consistently to help maintain grading standards.
  • Send required script samples to the Team Leader at the appointed times.
  • Work to the marking timetable and hit all required milestones.
  • Complete all administrative tasks exactly as instructed.

Experience and qualifications

  • At least one academic year of teaching experience is required, gained within the last 8 years, in the same subject area, and after becoming a qualified teacher.
  • A degree or an equivalent qualification is needed.
  • You must be a qualified teacher.

Skills and competencies

  • Ability to stay effective and accurate when working under pressure.
  • Strong time management and deadline discipline.
  • Deep knowledge of the subject to interpret and apply the mark scheme correctly.

Additional information

The marking window runs from May to July. Examiner training takes place between May and June.
