Fixed Term Appointment in General Medicine/Care of the Elderly

Job Overview

This role is based at Nevill Hall Hospital and entails delivering active medical care to patients admitted through the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) admitted to a 28-32 bedded sub-speciality inpatient ward. The post holder will be trained in evaluating and managing the medical, psychological, and social health needs of patients presenting to General Internal Medicine. The successful candidate will be accountable to the Assistant Medical Director, who also serves as the named Clinical Supervisor, and will collaborate closely with numerous medical teams located at Nevill Hall Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver junior-level support within a multi-disciplinary team on a dedicated inpatient ward.
• Participate in consultant-led ward rounds and multidisciplinary team (MDT) activities.
• Engage in multidisciplinary clinical tasks and research projects within the unit.
• Contribute to the active postgraduate teaching program and clinical audits prioritized by the department.
• Be part of the junior on-call rota (currently 1:20), covering both day and night shifts, managing approximately 30-40 acute admissions daily through the AMU comprising around 21 beds.
• Conduct assessments, monitor, and initiate treatments under consultant supervision appropriately for the grade and speciality.
• Undertake consultant and MDT ward rounds and supervise junior medical students rotating through the directorate.
• Carry out regular unsupervised ward rounds to monitor patient progress.
• Complete discharge summaries promptly and attend clinics as part of ongoing professional development.
• Perform research and service outcome evaluations as integral components of the role.

Experience and Qualifications

• At least one year of experience working within the NHS.
• Two years experience in medical specialties at the JCF/SCF level within the last two years.
• Evidence of career progression including attempted or completion of MRCP Part 1.
