Join Auckland Council's paid 12-week summer internship program, running from 23 November 2026 to 19 February 2027, compensated at the Living Wage rate of $29.90 per hour. This internship offers practical field and office-based experience within the Water Quality team of the Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit, contributing to meaningful projects that impact Auckland's environmental future.

What You'll Do

• Conduct freshwater ecology and water quality monitoring fieldwork 3-4 days per week across diverse regions within Auckland, experiencing a variety of landscapes and seascapes.
• Perform office tasks including data management and equipment organization and maintenance.
• Gain exposure to multiple environmental monitoring programs throughout the unit.
• Work on projects that support Auckland Council's environmental initiatives and contribute to the city's development.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should be currently enrolled in an environmental, biological, natural science degree or a related discipline, preferably in their penultimate or final year. Candidates planning to pursue postgraduate qualifications (PGDipSci, BSc Hons, MSc) are preferred. A passion for environmental data management and analysis, as well as a proactive and collaborative work approach, is essential.

Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods, with a strong commitment to health and safety practices.

Eligibility Criteria

• Enrolled in a relevant university degree program and either in the penultimate or final year.
• Eligible to work full-time in New Zealand during the internship period.
• Possess a clean, full New Zealand driver's license with willingness to operate Utes (required for field roles).
• Confident swimming ability due to potential water-based activities.
• Current first aid certificate, boating qualifications (Day Skipper), or water safety certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
