About the Role

Join the Technical Services team at the Faculty of Science, University of Auckland, supporting undergraduate chemistry laboratories. As a Teaching Chemistry Technician, you'll play a crucial part in creating safe, well-stocked, and engaging laboratory environments that enhance the educational experience for many students annually. Your day-to-day activities will include preparing experiments, maintaining specialized equipment, aiding academic staff, and assisting students during practical sessions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and pack down chemistry teaching labs for undergraduates.
  • Maintain the functioning and safety of laboratory instruments and facilities.
  • Manage chemicals, consumables, and inventory control efficiently.
  • Assist with practical teaching sessions and demonstrate proper lab equipment use.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems and help improve lab operations continuously.
  • Collaborate with academic personnel to develop and evaluate new teaching experiments.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and hazardous substance regulations.
  • Support public outreach, exhibitions, and engagement initiatives.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Hands-on experience within a chemistry lab environment.
  • Practical knowledge of lab instruments, chemical handling protocols, and safety practices.
  • Strong organizational capabilities and adeptness at prioritizing tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills with students and academic staff.
  • Proactive problem solver with a drive to enhance processes.
  • Eager to acquire new technical skills and methodologies.

A degree or qualification in chemistry or related field is preferable but not mandatory if relevant technical experience has been obtained.
