Role overview
Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is looking for a New Zealand registered early childhood education teacher to support children and their families at the Refugee Education Centre in Māngere, Auckland. This is a permanent part-time position at 0.8 FTE, working within a small, welcoming, and culturally varied environment.
The role centres on running a specialised five-week orientation programme for newly arrived former refugee children. The programme runs in five-week cycles that align with refugee intake periods.
Your work will help prepare children and their whānau for a smooth move into New Zealand school life by building early learning skills, confidence, and cultural understanding.

What you will do
You will deliver teaching and support as part of the five-week refugee education orientation programme, helping children adjust to a new learning context and supporting transition into local schooling.
You will contribute to a supportive, collegial setting and work closely with learners, families, and the wider team in a role that values cultural responsiveness, adaptability, and practical impact.
About you
We are seeking an educator who is flexible, empathetic, and comfortable working across changing needs. You should be collaborative, open to new approaches, and committed to creating a positive learning environment.
You will need strong intercultural awareness, cultural humility, and respect when working with Indigenous peoples and culturally diverse communities. Experience in equity, inclusion, or Indigenous-focused work would be an advantage.
Experience and knowledge
You should have more than two years’ experience in a similar role or field. A solid understanding of ESOL principles is desirable, as is experience supporting former refugees, migrants, or learners with additional needs.
Additional language ability, such as a second or third language, will be considered an advantage.
Eligibility and compliance
Applicants must hold New Zealand teacher registration. This position is treated as a children’s worker role and will require safety checks under the Children’s Act 2014.
