About the Role

The Ontario Heritage Trust is looking for a visionary leader to head its newly formed Property Management, Rentals and Tenant Services Branch. This position presents an exceptional opportunity to shape the stewardship and sustainable management of over 200 provincially owned heritage properties. These include historic theatres, landmarks, and natural heritage sites across Ontario.

As Director, you will provide strategic oversight for property operations, leasing, licensing, rentals, and tenant services to ensure these assets remain active, significant, and accessible. Your leadership will support the Trust's mission to conserve heritage and enhance the lives of Ontarians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Optimize the value, usage, and sustainability of built heritage assets through effective leasing, tenant relationship management, infrastructure planning, and operational oversight.
  • Supervise third-party property use, including rentals, leases, and licenses across the province.
  • Ensure that consistent, clear corporate policies apply across sites while adapting to the distinct needs of urban and rural communities.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships and communication channels to represent the interests and opportunities for heritage properties.
  • Promote collaboration, community engagement, equity, inclusion, accessibility, excellence, and employee wellness.

Leadership and Expertise

  • Provide balanced strategic direction aligned with operational oversight to guarantee successful results.
  • Inspire and develop high-performing, multifunctional teams within a dynamic operational environment.
  • Drive transformational change by championing modernization, innovative service delivery, and measured risk-taking for meaningful improvement.
  • Create an organizational culture rooted in diversity, inclusion, accessibility, anti-racism, equity, and psychological safety to enhance staff stability and morale across geographically dispersed teams.
  • Navigate complex workforce issues and labour relations to support long-term leadership development.

Relationship Management and Political Savvy

  • Communicate effectively with strong negotiation and consensus-building skills.
  • Deliver strategic, confidential, and time-sensitive guidance to senior leaders, ministry executives, and government officials.
  • Manage complex, high-profile, and politically sensitive matters involving varied and competing interests.
  • Integrate diverse perspectives to inform decision-making, innovation, and continuous service improvements.
  • Collaborate with partners to advance shared priorities through diplomacy, tact, and sound judgment.

Operational Knowledge and Skills

  • Lead adaptive reuse and activation of spaces through leasing and licensing activities.
  • Develop and oversee rental and leasing strategies to maximize earnings while respecting heritage value.
  • Monitor financial performance of leased and rented properties, providing regular reporting and analysis to guide strategic decisions.
  • Understand property management, including rental, leasing, maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Possess knowledge of government policies, processes, legislation related to heritage property oversight and accountability.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

The Ontario Heritage Trust welcomes applications from diverse groups, including individuals with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, Black and racialized communities, and those of varied ethnicities, cultures, sexual orientations, and gender identities. The organization is committed to accommodating needs during the recruitment process consistent with Ontario’s Human Rights Code and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
