Job description
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced, empathetic, and value-centered senior midwifery leader to serve as our Director of Midwifery. This critical position involves providing strong professional guidance and charting strategic directions across the Women and Children’s Division.
Reporting to the Group Chief Nursing Officer and collaborating closely with the Divisional Triumvirate, you will spearhead maternity service enhancement programs and sustain excellent standards throughout the division. As a prominent, values-based leader, you will embody the Trust’s principles, contribute to fostering a constructive and inclusive culture, and play a key role in shaping the future direction of our services and the group as a whole.
Commitment to Safety and Learning
In acknowledgment of the significant impact of the Independent Review of Maternity Services by Donna Ockenden at our organisation and the experiences of affected families, we dedicate ourselves to working collaboratively with families. Our aim is to incorporate the lessons learned into our organisational culture, governance frameworks, and clinical procedures. The role demands a collaborative, highly credible leader who balances compassion with a steadfast commitment to safety, quality, transparency, and ongoing improvement. Maintaining the central voice of women and families in delivering and evolving our services remains a priority.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Trust’s most senior midwife and expert resource for best practices in perinatal care.
- Lead midwifery and nursing teams to guarantee safe, effective, and bespoke care for women, birthing individuals, newborns, and their families.
- Manage workforce planning including recruitment, retention, and professional development.
- Drive continuous clinical practice quality assessment and improvements.
Poppy’s Promise Commitment
We emphasize compassionate care as fundamental in everything we do. Each team member, clinical or non-clinical, plays a vital role in delivering care and interaction imbued with dignity, empathy, and respect. We expect all staff to not only articulate compassion but also demonstrate it through attentive listening, clear and considerate communication, and understanding individual needs and circumstances.
Effective communication is a cornerstone of safe, quality healthcare. We value staff who engage thoughtfully with others, provide meaningful explanations, and approach concerns with patience and kindness.
By joining us, you commit to reinforcing these principles so that every patient feels listened to, respected, and valued, ensuring compassion permeates every engagement daily.
Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP)
Our services will relocate to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in 2028 as a part of the Hospital Transformation Programme, consolidating specialist services within a new, purpose-built, modern facility designed to enhance patient care and staff experience.
Successful applicants will be expected to transition with the Service in early 2028. This move will be managed via a formal change process with comprehensive consultation and support for affected employees.
