Role overview
This position sits within the Home & Lifestyle function and reports to the Creative Head - Soft Home. The role is focused on leading product development from concept to launch, backed by market study, trend spotting, sample coordination, and close teamwork across functions. The goal is to keep ranges timely, cost-conscious, commercially relevant, and aligned with new business opportunities.
Key responsibilities
- Develop product concepts and mood boards to establish the creative direction.
- Produce 2D and 3D concept sketches for the category, working alongside the design manager and QC team on joinery details, hardware, and related specifications.
- Prepare detailed 2D manufacturing drawings for production use.
- Translate the brief received from the CM into workable product concepts and designs.
- Build new design ideas that close product and MRP gaps while serving different customer segments and store formats.
- Carry out field-based print sampling, including colour selection, layout development, and styling ideas.
- Partner with the Category Head and merchandiser to identify gaps and needs for the upcoming season.
- Visit exhibitions, museums, and fashion, art, design, market fairs to stay current on fabrics, prints, and trends.
- Create design briefs for consultant designers and provide direction and feedback on the intended look and feel.
- Ensure briefs for designers, suppliers, and PHs are closed within timelines.
- Maintain an optimal product mix with the right craft, price point, and classification benchmarks, while staying aligned with key promotions.
- Drive new product development using the design brief, option plan, and range plan.
- Update perennial colours when required.
- Collect photographs and research material to support idea development based on emerging design trends for the assigned category.
- Review reports and compare findings with market research insights.
- Build mood boards and seasonal look books for collections.
- Share market intelligence and best-seller research with the Category Manager.
- Present design concepts and proposals to the category team.
- Prepare for internal range reviews up to the MRH stage and compile feedback for incorporation into the range.
- Support sampling for product presentations.
- Coordinate with PHs and vendors during sample development.
- Define the visual direction for shoots and the product presentation look.
- Ensure the full range is launched on the web store and E-Catalogue at the same time as promotions.
- Make sure all primary collection items are shot for social media use.
- Coordinate photoshoots end to end.
- Work on styling, creative direction, and the brand look during photoshoots.
- Manage photographs, images, creatives, and editing work through agencies.
- Align with all relevant departments to maintain consistency in design and concept execution.
- Collaborate across teams to improve productivity and support smoother delivery.
Experience and qualification
The role calls for 10 to 15 years of experience as a designer in a retail organisation or craft sector. Preferred qualifications include B.Design, a Masters in Design, or a diploma from NIFT or NID.
