Job description

Position Summary

The Deputy Director of Youth and Family Services operates under the supervision of the Director and assists with managing and directing departmental programs, operations, and services. This leadership role oversees certain program areas, helps manage department performance, and ensures alignment with the organization's goals, policies, and budget limits. Acting as a key operational leader, the Deputy Director transforms the Director's strategies into action plans for program implementation and guarantees consistent delivery of services across both city-run programs and contracted nonprofit providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support overall department management and administration in line with the Director's objectives.
  • Directly oversee specific divisions, initiatives, or programs within Youth and Family Services.
  • Assist in setting, executing, and tracking departmental goals, operational plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage day-to-day program activities ensuring efficient, effective, and compliant service delivery.
  • Track program outcomes and performance metrics, identifying challenges and advising on improvements.
  • Assist with budget management, including monitoring spending, planning forecasts, and maintaining funding compliance.
  • Provide leadership and support to managers and supervisors, focusing on staff development, accountability, and performance.
  • Coordinate with nonprofit partners to maintain contract adherence and service quality.
  • Represent the department in official meetings and community engagements as delegated.
  • Act as interim Director when the Director is unavailable.
  • Promote cooperative work relationships with other city departments, community organizations, and stakeholders for integrated services.

Additional Activities

  • Participate in professional groups to remain informed on latest trends and innovations related to youth and family services.
  • Execute other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

The ideal candidate would possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in relevant disciplines like public administration, social work, human services, education, or business administration. Candidates should have at least nine years of experience in managing human services programs, public administration, or leadership within nonprofits, preferably including six years in supervisory roles.

Licenses

  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License or ability to obtain it by the hire date.
  • City Operator's Permit required within six months after employment commencement.

Preferred Knowledge Areas

  • Expertise in human services management encompassing youth, family, recreation, health, and community programs.
  • Understanding of operational frameworks for complex service delivery organizations.
  • Knowledge of program development, management, and applicable laws and regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
  • Familiarity with research methods, business communication, municipal budgeting, and performance assessment techniques.

  • Experience in hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating staff.
