Director of Arts and Culture

Position Overview

The Director of Arts and Culture reports directly to the City Chief Operations Officer and is responsible for managing and overseeing a diverse set of programs within the Cultural Services Department. This department includes entities such as the Albuquerque Biological Park, which houses the Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Gardens, and Tingley Beach. The Albuquerque Museum showcases regional artwork and historical artifacts and hosts prominent traveling exhibits. There is a public-private partnership with Explora Science Center that offers interactive displays focused on science, art, culture, and technology. The Anderson/Abruzzo Balloon Museum presents exhibitions and educational programs related to lighter-than-air flight history, science, and art.

The Public Library of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County provides reading materials, research resources, and electronic information access. The community events division manages venues including the KIMO Theater and South Broadway Cultural Center, facilitating performances and cultural interactions. The department also organizes a variety of outdoor, multi-cultural events citywide, including in Old Town and manages rental operations of The Yards. Additionally, the Public Art Enhancement Program oversees the 1% for Art and Urban Enhancement Trust Fund programs. The Strategic Support unit provides central services such as operating GOV-TV, the local government channel, and handling department promotion and marketing.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the operations, budgeting, and personnel management within the Cultural Services Department.
• Assess and monitor department performance and initiate ongoing improvements.
• Collaborate productively with City Administration and the public to enrich Albuquerque’s cultural life by celebrating its unique history and arts.
• Provide services, programs, and collections that foster literacy, stimulate economic growth, and enhance learning in cutting-edge venues, boosting tourism.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Must hold or obtain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License by the date of hire.
• Required to acquire a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six months of starting employment.
