Position Overview

Reporting under general supervision, this role assists in managing all aspects of communications, media relations, and public information efforts linked to the Mayor’s Office and City departments. The Deputy Director plays a vital role in developing and implementing strategic communication plans that align with the Mayor’s key priorities, ensuring cohesive and timely messaging throughout the organization. This position also supports daily operations of communications, coordinates media responses, digital outreach, and public engagement while acting as a critical consultant on communication strategies and crisis handling to executive leadership.

Key Duties

  • Assist in overseeing media and public information communication for both internal and external audiences associated with the Mayor’s office and other city departments.
  • Coordinate and support strategic communication campaigns, media relations, digital communication, and public involvement initiatives.
  • Manage deadlines, deliverables, and ensure the quality of communication projects.
  • Draft, revise, and proofread various communication materials including press statements, speeches, social media posts, and talking points.
  • Provide assistance in organizing large-scale events such as press conferences and public appearances involving senior executives.
  • Monitor media coverage, aid in the response to media inquiries, and manage crisis communication efforts.
  • Facilitate collaboration between departments, executive leadership, public information officers, and external stakeholders.
  • Participate actively in communications strategy sessions and long-term messaging planning.
  • Guide communication staff and public information officers to maintain consistent messaging and uphold communication standards.
  • Ensure alignment of communication materials with the administration’s priorities and branding guidelines.
  • Maintain and nurture relationships with media entities, reporters, community groups, and partner organizations.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communications and propose enhancements to strategies and outreach activities.
  • Prepare reporting documents, progress updates, and strategic recommendations related to communication efforts.
  • Act as the Director of Communications during the Director’s absence, as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Carry out other related tasks and duties as assigned to support department goals.

Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in communications, journalism, political science, public administration, public relations, marketing, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • At least six years of progressively responsible experience in communications, media relations, public information, public affairs, journalism, or related fields is preferred.
  • Two years of supervisory or leadership experience is also preferred.
  • Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or be able to obtain it by the hiring date.
  • A City Operator’s Permit (COP) must be acquired within six months of employment.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting involving routine use of computer screens.
  • Frequent interaction with media representatives, elected officials, staff, and the general public is expected.
  • The role may require sitting or standing for extended periods, occasional light lifting and carrying, and attending meetings or events outside normal business hours.
