Core Clinical Fellow in Elderly Care

Job Overview

The Older Person’s Medicine Department at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust includes the Acute Frailty Unit and Wards 7, 8, 17, 18, and 20. Fellows may be required to work flexibly across these areas. The department manages elderly patients often affected by frailty, dementia, and multiple comorbidities, using a comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient-centered approach focused on comprehensive geriatric assessment.

Main Duties

• Accountable to Consultants for professional duties and supervision of junior staff.
• Responsible for routine and emergency patient admissions.
• Required to be on duty for emergencies as per rota.
• Conduct daily ward rounds to monitor patient progress, ensure treatments are administered, and accompany Consultants on rounds.
• Maintain thorough patient records and promptly manage correspondence.
• Available to discuss patient care with relatives when necessary.
• Keep Consultants informed about serious cases, deaths, or any other critical matters; refer uncertain cases to Consultants.
• Perform duties assigned by Consultants, including handling emergencies and unforeseen situations.
• Provide training, supervision, and occasional lectures to junior medical staff and nursing personnel.
• Report any health concerns regarding junior staff to Consultants.
• Participate in daily board and ward rounds followed by ward duties, procedures, and meetings with relatives.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

• MB, ChB or equivalent medical degree with a valid ALS certificate.
• Minimum one year experience as Senior House Officer (SHO) in acute General Medicine, including acute on-call duties.
• At least two years post-registration experience.
• Desirable: Part I MRCP, Part II Written or PACES, or equivalent certification.

Experience:

• Experience managing acute medical admissions and inpatient care.
• Competent in performing ward rounds and ward-level clinical work at SHO level.

Skills and Knowledge:

• Strong intellectual ability with excellent organization and decision-making skills for managing complex medical cases.
• Effective interpersonal skills for interaction with patients and healthcare team members.
• Able to apply medical theory into practice and recognize when expert assistance is needed.
