Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Band 5 Staff Nurse to join Ward 20, an 18-bed female medical unit at Wexham Park Hospital, focused on delivering compassionate, patient-centred care for a diverse range of acute and chronic medical patients. Ward 20 admits patients primarily from the Emergency Department and other acute channels, concentrating on prompt assessment, treatment, and continuous management, alongside robust discharge planning to ensure smooth patient transitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence-based nursing care tailored to the needs of acutely ill patients.
  • Participate actively in the holistic nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care plans.
  • Coordinate and facilitate efficient and safe discharge procedures in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and discharge coordinators.
  • Administer medications according to hospital guidelines with safety and accuracy.
  • Monitor patient conditions closely, responding and escalating concerns for deteriorating patients promptly.
  • Maintain comprehensive, accurate clinical documentation in a timely manner.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment, offering support and guidance to junior staff, students, and healthcare assistants.
  • Contribute to infection control initiatives, uphold hygiene standards, and drive improvements to enhance patient experience on the ward.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mandatory registration as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Previous exposure to medical ward settings is essential.
  • Experience using EPIC electronic patient record system is required.
  • Training or study related to dementia is desirable.
  • Experience caring for elderly dementia patients and managing chronic medical conditions is advantageous.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with capacity to manage challenging and stressful situations effectively.
  • Effective time management and prioritisation skills for self and team duties.
  • Ability to train, supervise, and mentor junior colleagues.

  • Availability to work flexible shifts including weekends and bank holidays.
