The Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based specialist care, with a strong focus on accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and ongoing management of patients under their care. This role is also expected to demonstrate clinical excellence, provide leadership within the specialty, and contribute to the training and development of junior medical staff.

Key responsibilities

• Follow and support all hospital, division, and department policies, procedures, and initiatives.
• Contribute to the organization’s performance management activities, including peer review, productivity review, and utilization review.
• Support scheduling efforts and assist the Division Chief in maintaining adequate medical coverage at all times.
• Attend divisional meetings when required.
• Assist with the recruitment of medical staff when needed.
• Carry out additional clinical or administrative tasks assigned by the Division Chief.
• Assess, diagnose, and treat patients in line with accepted best-practice standards for the specialty.
• Supervise junior medical staff and take responsibility for the care they provide.
• Adhere to hospital rules related to admissions, consultations, daily care, surgical procedures, discharge, outpatient follow-up, and other patient-care processes.
• Use organizational resources responsibly and appropriately.
• Lead ward rounds and review inpatients and outpatients regularly according to best practice.
• Document clinical information clearly, accurately, and promptly in line with established procedures.
• Review investigation results routinely and adjust treatment plans when necessary.
• Coordinate with other specialties and support services as needed.
• Participate actively in multidisciplinary discussions to support safe, effective, and holistic patient care.
• Ensure patients are prepared for procedures, including obtaining informed consent.
• Accept appropriate referrals from emergency care, primary care, specialty clinics, other departments, walk-in patients, and outside hospitals.
• Provide and support on-call coverage on a rotational basis, including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
• Communicate clinical updates to patients and, with consent, to family members or friends in a timely manner.
• Maintain professional working relationships and promote teamwork across the care team.
• Perform other clinical duties as assigned.
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the department.
• Encourage regular audits and use audit findings to improve clinical practice.
• Support the reporting, investigation, and response to adverse or untoward incidents.
• Promote learning and continuous development through supervision, guidance, and instruction of junior medical staff.
• Help deliver essential specialty-related training for clinical staff.
• Show ongoing commitment to continuing medical education.
• Encourage and take part in clinical research and publication.
• Stay up to date with current literature, emerging trends, and new technologies relevant to the specialty.

Compliance and professional requirements

• Work in accordance with SSMC facility policies, procedures, practices, and other regulatory requirements.
• Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and mandatory training within the prescribed timelines.
• Protect confidentiality in line with organizational expectations and standards.

Qualifications and experience

• Required experience for Tier 1 candidates: at least 2 years of relevant experience as a consultant or in an equivalent role after board certification.
• Required experience for Tier 2 candidates: at least 8 years of full-time experience as a consultant or equivalent after board certification, including fellowship years, at an internationally accredited institute.
• For UAE nationals, clinical fellowship training after the primary specialty board may be counted toward experience, with 1 fellowship year treated as 2 years of clinical experience.
• The fellowship substitution applies only to clinical subspecialty fellowships from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, or the USA, or from HAAD-accredited fellowship programs.
• Applicants must hold a qualification from Tier 1 or Tier 2.
• A current national license or an equivalent license is required.
• Annual CME evidence must be available.
