Staff Nurse - Tower B4, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

Job purpose

The staff nurse is responsible for coordinating nursing care, which includes direct patient care, education for patients and families, and support during care transitions. This role contributes to professional nursing practice across the full continuum of care and delivers age-appropriate care in line with the Nursing Scope of Practice set by the relevant regulatory authority. The nurse is expected to reflect and promote SSMC’s mission, vision, and values, while following the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Key responsibilities

• Gathers and interprets comprehensive assessment information covering physical, psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs, then uses that information to identify patient problems or diagnoses.
• Applies evidence-based assessment methods and tools, confirms findings with the patient, family, and healthcare team when appropriate, and documents assessment data according to established standards.
• Ranks clinical information based on the patient’s current condition and likely needs, while identifying possible risks or barriers to health and safety.
• Develops individualized care plans with the patient, family, and team, ensuring the plan supports culturally appropriate care, health promotion, health restoration, and continuity of care.
• Updates care plans as the patient’s condition changes and records measurable goals using recognized clinical terminology.
• Carries out the care plan in partnership with the patient, family, and team using timely, evidence-based interventions and treatments suited to the patient’s needs.
• Performs procedures and treatments according to approved protocols and administers medications in line with organizational policies.
• Ensures the complete care plan, including any revisions, is properly documented in the patient record and shares relevant information across care settings.
• Uses resources responsibly and works within a cost-conscious framework.
• Delivers patient and family education using teaching methods suited to individual learning needs and clinical conditions.
• Supports health promotion and self-management by helping patients and families build skills to maintain or restore healthy lifestyles.
• Uses teach-back and other feedback methods to confirm learning and records all education provided in the health record.
• Evaluates progress toward goals, reviews patient and family understanding, and revises diagnoses, outcomes, and plans based on ongoing assessment.
• Provides complete clinical handover reports to support patient safety, attends rounds, and updates the attending provider on changes in condition.
• Communicates changes in care plans and unit activity to the wider care team and documents reassessments and plan revisions.
• Applies current evidence-based nursing knowledge and research findings to practice and participates in evidence-based initiatives and improvement projects.
• Shares research and evidence-based updates with the healthcare team and contributes to performance improvement efforts.
• Acts as a professional role model, supports a safe and organized work environment, and coordinates delegated work to ensure completion.
• Uses critical thinking in prioritization and decision-making, takes part in shared decision-making, and pursues leadership opportunities.
• Supervises practical nurses, junior staff, and student nurses to help ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Upholds professional ethics, protects patient rights, advocates for patients and families, and supports self-advocacy.
• Raises concerns about unsafe practices when needed, reports illegal or incompetent conduct according to policy, and evaluates personal practice against professional standards.
• Considers cost, effectiveness, environmental health, and patient safety when choosing practice options.
• Uses electronic tools and clinical resources for information retrieval, communication, documentation, and decision support.
• Promotes a work environment that reduces environmental health risks and communicates exposure-reduction strategies to others.
• Commits to ongoing learning, mentors others, and responds to emergencies in accordance with organizational procedures.

Qualifications and experience

• At least 2 years of clinical experience after qualification in an appropriate care setting is required.
• This experience requirement is waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges or universities after completion of internship.
• A bachelor’s degree in nursing is required, or a nursing degree with a minimum course duration of 2 years plus registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia.
• A valid and current national license is required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are preferred for the specialty area.
